کریستوفر ملچرت

کریستوفر ملچرت[۱] کارشناس و اسلام‌شناس آمریکایی در سال ۱۹۵۵ متولد شد. دوران کودکی را در منطقه خلیج سانفرانسیسکو سپری کرد و در سال ۱۹۷۳ تحصیلات متوسطه را در دبیرستان برکلی به پایان رساند. مابین سال‌های ۱۹۷۶ تا ۱۹۸۲ در دوره‌های فشرده دانشگاه پنسلوانیا در برکلی شرکت کرد و زبان‌های عربی و فارسی را آموخت. تحصیلات تکمیلی را در دانشگاه پرینستون ادامه داد و در سال ۱۹۹۲ مدرک دکترای خود را در رشته تاریخ از دانشگاه پنسیلوانیا اخذ کرد. رساله دکترای او بعدها به صورت مستقل و در کتابی به نام” تشکیل مکاتب فقهی اهل سنت” توسط انتشارات بریل به چاپ رسید. موضوع پژوهشی او جنبش‌ها و نهاد‌های اسلامی در قرن نهم و دهم و عصر حاضر است. وی به تدریس دررشته‌های گوناگون اسلامی چون حدیث، فقه اسلامی، عرفان و نیز ادبیات عرب در “کالج کمپروک ” پرداخته است. تحقیقات و مقالات او جوایز و دست‌آوردهایی متعددی را چون جایزه کمک هزینه تحصیلی ماری کوری برای مقاله ” الگوهای فقه و تقوا در صدر اسلام”برایش به ارمغان آورد. از جمله مقالات پرسر و صدای او مقاله ای درباره اینکه آیا زنان می توانند رهبری جامعه اسلامی را بر عهده بگیرند است که در این مقاله به بررسی دیدگاه‌های مربوط شیعه و سنی پرداخته است. کریستوفر ملچرت در حال حاضر استاد و عضو هیئت علمی موسسه شرق‌شناسی دانشگاه اکسفورد است و اخیرا تحقیقاتی را در زمینه “زندگی و آثار احمد ابن حنبل ” و “عرفان ودیگر جنبش‌های مورد بحث پیش از جندیان” در دست دارد.
