An essential reference and systematic discussion of early script styles. Contains high quality images and extensive descriptions of many works in the private collection of Nasser D. Khalili.

Gacek, Adam. The Arabic Manuscript Tradition: a Glossary of Technical Terms and Bigliograhy- Supplement. Leiden, The Netherlands: Koninklijke Brill NV, 2008.
Provides a really great list of relevant authors and recently published titles, including works already referenced in this research (Bloom & Deroche), among others. Also a useful and interesting glossary of terms related to Arabic script, calligraphy, and manuscripts, both in Arabic, English, and Roman transliterations.

Greundler, Beatrice. The Development of the Arabic Scripts. Atlanta: Scholars Press, 1993.
A somewhat less organized attempt at a classification system akin to Deroche’s. It does, however, cover the evolution of every letter, rather than the few most distinctive that Deroche references.

A really excellent text which addresses everything from the origins of Arabic calligraphy to specific proportional guidelines, architectural context, and contemporary paintings. Accompanied by beautiful color plates and large scale illustrations.

Moginet, Stefan F. Writing Arabic: from Script to Type. New York: the American University in Cairo Press, 2009.
Basic history of evolution of scripts, less about aesthetic/decorative aspects, more about “the principal function of writing itself… a vital means for communicating and transmitting knowledge” (۵). Great timeline of evolution of various scripts, and interesting overview of the adaptation of western printing to suit the Arabic alphabet. The idea of writing being a form of “artificial memory” (۹).

An introductory grammar and script booklet.

Roxburgh, David J. Writing the Word of God: Calligraphy and the Qur’an. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2007.
Mostly a catalog from a show at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Focuses pretty heavily on the aesthetics of the pieces and different script styles.

Schimmel, Annemarie. Calligraphy and Islamic Culture. New York: New York University Press, 1984.
More in depth imaginings about the life of the calligrapher, particularly the pupil.

Safadi, Yasin Hamid. Islamic Calligraphy. London: Thames and Hudson Ltd., 1978.
Good example of the incredibly wide application of calligraphy as ornamentation, in everything from ceramics and textiles to architecture.
